I made a dress ya know..!

I'm so chuffed with myself! Honestly, I'm over the moon with my new creation, but perhaps more with my new talent :)

It all started with this whole vintage/ 50's/ Mad Men style that's hitting us. I instantly recognised that even my post natal size 14 body could pull this one off.. Boobs, hips... boobs...

So it began. I searched eBay, asos, very, all the usual Internet spots but nope.. Only poor replicas of classic designs and you can never be sure of the material until it arrives. I did however have the experience I gained in Mrs Longmuirs class back in 1995 where I made some flares amongst other things whilst dead set on a career as a fashion designer at 16.. So pattern shopping it became..

I popped along to see Christine Barker in Scott street who was more than helpful, pricey, but helpful. I chose a black and red dog tooth material. But soft not scratchy. And I found a pattern (new look 6000) and decided on pattern C. 2m, a couple of buttons, cotton, zip and £34 later I was sorted..

First things first; I clear my dining room table. (sorry busy house, this table is now mine) Which if your going to try this us essential, clutter and a small working area will not do. You need space, to lay out, take in and ponder.

I cut the pattern to a size 12. They're massive sheets of tracing paper with loads of complicated symbols on them so take some time to read the Key and digest the language before getting scissor happy. Otherwise, like me, you will get in a huff and almost give up before you've started. It's easy, pour some wine, pop Nina Simone on low and take 30mins to read ahead of the instructions and just get into the 50's housewife mindset, perhaps even apply some red lippy and a bow ;)

To be continiued... Must find my iPod for tonights gig.. X
